Reciprocal Tuition
A groundbreaking Reciprocal Tuition Agreement between the province of BC and First Nations has been set in the current Jurisdiction negotiations this past year. Under the Reciprocal Tuition Agreement, First Nations are obligated to pay public School Boards for students enrolled in Provincial Public Schools. This has been the case for Lake Babine Nation since learners were first enrolled in public schools. In turn, under this agreement, BC is obligated to pay First Nations for students who live off-reserve or on leased lands on-reserve who are enrolled in First Nations on-reserve schools at the block rate of the School District within First Nations respective territories.
What this means is that for any Lake Babine Nation learners who live off-reserve AND any non-Lake Babine Nation learners who attend any of our schools – we can now invoice the province for tuition at the current school district block tuition rate. For example, the latest block rate, set by the province for school District #91 is $9,488.00. Lake Babine Nation would receive this amount for each student for which we invoice the province.
