The Lake Babine Social Development Department is here to provide quality social assistance to members in need living on-reserve.
As in our Summer Newsletter:
There is a society that helps our department with issues like policy clarification, help with disability applications and such. This society is First Nations Social Development Society, FNSDS is locatied in North Vancouver. The funding that FNSDS recieves is through Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada(AANDC). Currently, AANDC has completely cut the funding for this important society. The FNSDS will no longer support our department once their doors close on September 1, 2015. The B.C. Aboriginal Network on Disability (BCANDS) will be taking over the Person's with Disability Application as well as the Nutritional Supplement applications. These changes are in support from one society to another, and DO NOT affect the Lake Babine Nation Social Development Department Operations.
The Social Development Department follows Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) Income Assistant Policy for Social Development. We follow these policies with strict requirements for each program we administer.

To ensure you receive the benefits you are entitled to in a prompt and timely manner, it is essential that you complete and hand in all paperwork.
SPECIAL NEEDS ALLOWANCE:
This is available based on meeting specific eligibility criteria for each allowance:
ADULT-IN-HOME CARE (Homemaker Services)
This service is available for Elders or people with disabilities that need help with day-to-day tasks such as preparing meals, housecleaning and laundry. This also assists the clients who don’t have a family member nearby who can perform these tasks.
Training and Employment Support Initiatives is to assist recipients in developing the skills they need in order to enter vocational training, educational programs, or employment.
National Child Benefit (NCB):

Children Out of Parental Home (COPH):
Children Out of Parental Home COPH (formerly GFA) -- This program is no longer funded once the current files are closed or the children are of age. Their use to be the program where children were able to be placed with their relatives, this now has to be done through The Ministry of Children and Family Development.
Rent & Utilities:
Rent is $640.00 divided by 6 people is $106.67. Therefore, the Social Assistant client pays $213.34, as rent will be for two people and the working tenant pays $426.64.
BC Hydro and Pacific Northern Gas Payments:
Our Department only pays the equal payment amount on a monthly basis. If the eqaul payment amount for Pacific Northern Gas is $240.00, you would divide this by 6 people, which is $40.00. Therefore, on behalf of the Social Assistant client, our Departmentwould pay $80.00. The amount of $160.00 is the responsibility of the working tenant. The same procedure is applied to BC Hydro bills.
